Bogota

The Shadow of the Wind

Bogota is the distant home of Sophie Carax after she resumes contact with Antoni Fortuny, and it becomes an unlikely source of support for Julian in Barcelona. The city links a family separated by years and distance to the precarious life Nuria has built around protecting him.

Sophie’s Life in Bogota

Antoni Fortuny tells Daniel that Sophie lives in Bogota with a distinguished doctor, runs her own music school, and often writes to ask after Julian. Fortuny and Sophie have resumed contact after years of misunderstandings; memories of their son are now the principal bond between them. Though far from Barcelona, Sophie remains attentive to Julian’s fate through her letters.

A Distant Source of Support

After Fortuny dies, Nuria takes advantage of the uncertainty surrounding his estate. Posing as a lawyer and claiming to represent Julian, she writes to Sophie in Bogota that Fortuny left no will and that his properties—the apartment on Ronda de San Antonio and the shop in the same building—may pass to his son. Nuria asks Sophie to authorize the transfer and arrange for the building manager to send documents and property payments to the fictitious lawyer.

Sophie accepts the proposed arrangement and instructs the manager to send the money. It reaches Nuria through a Barcelona post-office box under the assumed lawyer’s name; the manager keeps an unauthorized share, but the remainder helps Nuria and Julian survive. Bogota thus enters their story not as a place they visit, but as the remote point from which family concern is redirected, unknowingly, into practical aid.

Narrative Significance

The distance between Bogota and Barcelona gives Nuria’s deception room to work: Sophie’s wish to help Julian and renew contact with him makes her receptive to the legal fiction. At the same time, the correspondence shows how memories of Julian continue to connect his estranged parents. Bogota stands at the far end of that fragile connection, sustaining a life Sophie believes she is helping her son reclaim, while the truth remains hidden from her.
